Separate Baptists

Separate Baptists
The term Separate Baptists originated in New England in the middle of the 17th century when the Baptist movement split over the issue of revivalism. As a result of the Great Awakening, the promotion of revivals became a popular activity among all the churches. Most Baptists, however, opposed it, and those that accepted the new practice separated themselves from the main community of believers. The large body of antirevivalists became known as Regular Baptists. While most Baptists moved beyond this controversy, there remain in the United states several groups that retain the name separate Baptists and Regular Baptists.
